Although there are many ways to potty train a puppy, we will only discuss crate training (this is the only way we have trained our pups).
*First thing we must remember is that pups will only do what we allow them to do. We see our pups like our kids, and like kids, pups need discipline, rules, direction, love, and attention. Pups will always test what they can get away with. It's important to remember, that although they are super cute as pups, they do get older, and things won't be as cute.
*Second thing we must remember is that dogs do not understand "words" they understand tone and feel the energy we give/release. A pup doesn't know what "go potty" means. This is why we must teach them.
#1 - Make a schedule/routine This is good to follow with anything especially feeding time and potty time. (The sooner the better)
#2 - Puppies will have to potty more often until they learn to hold it for longer periods (usually after 6-8 months). Therefore, always take your pup out in the AM, after any naps, feeding, drinking, and hard playing time (if playing, pup may need to go every 20-30 minutes).
#3 - When it is time to take your pup out to potty, try to always use 1 designated area. It is important that when you take your pup out to "potty" it is ONLY to potty. Do Not allow your pup to get distracted or play. Do this by using a firm tone with a command or a sound to show disapproval and get attention. Only give your pup a set time period 10 minutes Max. If he does NOT do his business Return him/her to crate and try again 20-30 minutes. ONLY allow play time/free range if he/she has done both duties outside.
#4 - It is important to name the action of both #1 and #2. While your pup is outside say the command (we use "potty" for #1 "potty potty" for #2) as you see him/her doing the action. By repeating the phrase you want to use, which describes what they are doing, you teach them a name for that action. As soon as they have done their duty, make the BIGGEST deal in the world. (Helpful tip: we always make sure they go #1 at least 2-3 times and #2 if it is in the AM or after feedings)
#5 - It is VERY important that as soon as you come in from outside you RETURN your pup to his/her crate. This shows them that they were outside to potty and potty only so they don't get potty time and play time confused. You only have to leave in the crate about a minute, but this action is what will help the most!
#6 - While potty training you Do Not want the pups to have free range of the house. To much space at 1 time will ALWAYS result in accidents. The more accidents you have, the harder it will be. Once the pup has not had an accident for a week in 1 area, open up other areas of your house.
#7 - Always let your pup walk to the door he/she will use to go outside to potty, this way they learn the way out. We bell trained, instead of having the dog bark to go out. We do this by putting bells on the door and anytime we go out we walk them to the door, at the door we grab their paw or nose and have them touch the bell, have them sit, then open the door.
*Remember to be Consistent & create a routine*
*Remember that being firm and discipline is not being mean*
